they shouldn't hybrids don't get a sufficient enough gain in mileage to offset their extra cost and initial pollution from production (check out the pollution and environmental damage caused by the nickle refineries to get the nickle for all of those hybird's batteries). Hybrids are a gimick to make people think they are being environmentally friendly when they are not.

save gas and it's good for the environment!

because on hybrid cars you don't need gas, which means that you are not polluting the air, which means that to some people you are savior or something like that… And so by saving all that money for gas you have a lot of money to spend :p And yes hybrid cars are expensive the amount of it is the amount of a regular car for like a month. So that's what I have to say!

Because the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is extremely wasteful.
Consider this, an ICE is much louder and runs much hotter than an electric motor. All that heat and sound is wasted energy.
A car that has an electric motor for each wheel instead of one big motor driving 2 or four tires can have a computer that controls how much energy goes to each motor, that's another way the electric motor is more energy efficient. Having four electric motors instead of one also means that you no longer need a traditional transmission, which also contributes to wasted energy again, in the form of heat. and sound energy. There's more, lack of transmission means fewer moving parts, means less steel to make those parts. Fewer moving parts means less to break down.
These benefits are just off the top of my head.
Even if an EV oponent were to bring up the need to use energy to charge the hybrid batteries, it could easily be countered by the fact that a Hybrid will use muich less fuel to charge those batteries than a ICE would use to only move the car from point A to point B.
As for the added cost of Hybrids,
Look into the ta breaks the gov gave to SUV buyers vs. the tax break given to hybrid buyers. It's gotta make you wonder, why would the gov do that?

Hybrids are moving us one step towards a more responsible future. We need to consider fuel here….fossil fuels are a limited resource (oil, gasoline) however, we are in an amazing time where we recognize this and are acting with this knowledge before it becomes a major disaster.
Hybrid cars need to be used and driven by consumers so that we can make them better and more user friendly. Hybrid cars do save on gas and are greener than conventional cars but come with a not so attractive up front price.
Part of being green is using every last drop and saving good items from junk yard deaths. So for arguements sake, if you own a conventional car is makes good sense to drive it til it truly dies and not just go about buying new cars. In Colorado it's not uncommon to see the beautiful gas guzzling SUV parked in the garage and the Prius in the driveway. How green is it to have two cars when all you needed was one?
Perhaps the greenest way to go is to forgo the cars altogether and ask yourself - why not ride a bike?

Matt's got it correct.
The stats are against the hybrids.
Hybrids are "feel good cars" making their owners feel like they are actually making a difference in the alleged global warming crisis.
Unfortunately, Al Gore is all smoke and mirrors.

I agree they are a waste, and, uh, yeah they DO require gas! Most folks in the Washington DC area bought them so they use the carpool lanes without having a carpool. There are other cars that come close in mileage without being hybrids, and if America would just embrace the diesel like Europe has, we wouldn't even need the hybrids. I have a feeling a lot of hybrid owners will be dumping them when they reach 5 years+ in age. Battery replacement will most likely eat up what ever savings there are in gas.
